What is the highway classification in Mexico?
For those that we are used to be simple passengers in buses or cars, maybe all the highways look similar for us, at least at simple sight. However, as similar are from other, have special function from others.
The highway classification in Mexico is in charge of the Ministry of Communications and Transportation (SCT).
Depending on the importance of features of highways, is how are assigned to a specific category.
Exist three categories to know: federal highway network, state networks, rural roads and improved breaches.
Each of them has their own functions, favoring specific transports and connecting particular areas. The details are described below:
Federal Highway Network (in Spanish, Red Federal de Carreteras)
In the classification of highways in mexico, the ones that belong to federal network are the most important ones, or at least, the ones with greater presence. The federal government is the one in charge or attend the 100% of them.
These highways connect a huge number of cities, then, registrate the majority of passenger and freight transport movements.
Likewise, in these tracks are performed the journeys of greater distance and time, above all, the ones related to foreign trade and sectors with more presence in national economy.

This category is more focused in the social interconnection than the conomic one, without a sector being at odds with the other.

Weight and type of transport categories
By existing a classification of highways in Mexico according to the type of transports and communities that connect, is logic that also exist categories for those transports.
In total, exist 5 categories of this class. For that, consider the weight, dimensions and capacity of the type of transport that circulate on these. This is very helpful, above all for freight transportations, due indicate where to circulate in a safe way from them and the others.
According to the SCT, the categories are divided in the following way:
ET & A: in these can circulate all kind of vehicles that due physical and geometrical features allow to other cars move safely in the road.
B. Primary network: intended for the interstate communication with the main function of link the transit.
C. Secondary Network: covers all the state highways with medium lengths. These connect with class b, meaning, primary network.
D. Feeder Network: the lengths of these highways are the shortest of all, mainly, for being a municipal service, but have the option of connect with secondary network, achieving a greater reach.
It must be mentioned that large, double trailer and articulated vehicles have certain restrictions or prohibitions in the B,C and D type roads, so consider it for your next trip.
